Editor's choiceHidden jewel
Monte is a well-hid jewel in one of the Croatian small coastal towns. This restaurant stands out from typical eating places in that area. From the moment you enter Monte, you realise that you are about to have a very unique food experience. The interior of the restaurant is very stylish and more on the minimalistic side; however, the tables on the glass-walled former terrace add a soft and more Mediterranean feel to the place. Monte is rather small, so it is highly recommended to book in advance.

From the moment you enter Monte, you realise that you are about to have a very unique food experience. Monte is rather small, so it is highly recommended to book in advance. What stroke us as well, is a separate beautiful open seating area across from the restaurant building where guests could enjoy a drink and/or a smoke. It is done in the shape of oriental marquee with bright white fabric over comfortable and big rattan sofas.  A great place to start or finish the evening!

On to the food! The menu offers you either separate a la carte dishes or you pick between a five and a seven course degustation menu. If you are a true food lover, most likely you would be intrigued by the latter. We were no exception and chose the 5 course menu. In addition the restaurant offers to pair your meal with wines carefully chosen by the house sommelier. Being in the wine region of Croatia, this makes perfect sense. We do recommend to try this out!

Waiting for the first plate to arrive, we were served home-made bread (a few varieties) and very elegantly presented sea salt crystals, olive oil and smoked butter.  Smoked butter was the most interesting taste of all as paired well with the freshly baked bread and created an unusual flavour for such a simple combination of bread and butter. Shortly after amuse bouche has arrived: served in a small crystal glass, it was a combination of chilled yogurt with sauté of dried cherry tomatoes and aubergine capped with oregano foam. The dish was delicious and the combination of ingredients was delicately complimentary. Such beginning certainly sets you in the right mood to enjoy the rest of the dinner!

As a starter we were served two different seafood plates. One was a delicately grilled squid accompanied by the crabmeat and finely sliced fresh fennel on a thin layer of melting potato puree. Second dish was seared tuna served with beetroot gnocchi accompanied by horseradish espuma and a small portion of fresh shredded seasonal vegetables. The combination of tuna with horseradish was striking and mesmerising. For the main course we were presented with one seafood dish and a meat plate. The seafood dish was poached monk fish served with seared scallop and grilled langoustine; accompanied by the special “chef sauce” made of crustaceans.  As a meat plate we chose different things: one was slowly cooked suckling pig with beetroot jelly, leek and fresh slices of green apple; the other - entrecote on celery puree with red onion jelly, fresh summer truffles in red wine sauce. Both dishes had impeccable presentation and unforgettable, unique taste!

The evening continued with more surprises: we were served a pre-dessert. It was meant to clean our palate and prepare us for the sweet experience. It was truly exceptional and quite unexpected combination of textures. You simply need to come and test it yourself. The actual dessert was a meringue served on yogurt-honey ice cream paired with warm poached apples and cinnamon crumble. This was a beautiful ending to a meal! Although, there was another surprise after the dessert... all we can say is that it would not disappoint the chocolate lovers among us. And to those of us who are into molecular cuisine, we recommend to test a seven-course degustation menu. We can guarantee that it would be interesting!

Service was seamless and yet very attentive. The team of the restaurant worked very well together, everything was well coordinated which contributed to a warm atmosphere of the place.

Monte is worth a visit for a food lover. And did we mention that Monte has an amazing location? Enjoy this special experience and awaken your taste buds!
