Editor's choiceHidden jewel
We all have our own preferences, and here is one of mine: Maison de la Truffe located in the Place de la Madeleine. It is a small, very elegant restaurant dedicated to the French gastronomical jewel – truffles.
Paris is known as the gourmet world capital. Everybody seems to have been to Paris at least once and everybody or almost everybody admires French chefs. Trying to pick a place in such a city is close to impossible as you want to write about so many! A good thing is that we all have our own preferences, and here is one of mine: Maison de la Truffe located in the Place de la Madeleine. It is a small, very elegant restaurant dedicated to the French gastronomical jewel – truffles. The restaurant also has a very modern shop right upon entrance to the restaurant; so your eye is already fascinated by the various delicacies and aromas of the presented products. All of the products contain truffle in some shape or form: they range from olive oils to salami, pasta, foie gras, cheese and many more!

The ambience of the restaurant is very relaxing and yet stylish. The walls have beautiful pictures of truffles as well as episodes from truffle hunts.  The interior is done in light brown colours contrasted with the beige walls and a wonderful candlelight at the time of a dinner.  Service is very good and extremely efficient. You always feel welcomed and helped – your wishes are indisputable. The menu has a few traditional plates and every season you find something new & characteristic of that time. The main ingredient of all dishes is truffle; and not only 1 variety; but usually a few which can significantly impact the flavour of your chosen dish. One of my favourite delights are beef carpaccio, seasonal truffle and parmesan; another good combination to try is a salad “folle” with seasonal truffles and prawns;  and if you want something very special, then you should order truffled feuilleté “à la sauce perigueux”.  If you like soups, I certainly recommend to give a close look to the available offers. If you find chestnut cream soup with seasonal truffle & smoked bacon, I would recommend to give it a try. There are also such delicacies on the menu as foie gras and caviar; this will be a pleasant feast to your palate. Mains also have something special to offer you: Rossini beef filet with truffle sauce (meat is melting in your mouth); filets of sole, black truffle sauce, sautéed carrots and artichokes; a few varieties of pasta & risotto (raviolis with summer truffles and truffled cream – a divine experience).

And what about deserts, you may ask? Would truffle be an ingredient in those too? If you pick the assortment of cheeses – you can be sure to find truffle there. As for sweet selection, I would highlight chocolate fondant with vanilla truffle ice-cream. Truffle’ strong flavour gives a new twist to dark chocolate fondant and makes the flavour even deeper.

As we sat and enjoyed the evening, we ordered some digestifs. There is nothing like a good ending note... and at times the end is the beginning of something new...
