Contarena is the place to be seen in Udine. Located in an old stately municipal office building, built between 1911 and 1925, Contarena is both an American bar, wine bar, restaurant and cafe in the heart of the historic center of Udine. Entering Contarena is like stepping back in time – a warm atmosphere with all the mosaics in the grand hall, the marble floors, and an elegant enterior designed like in the 1920s, a colourfull backlit bar with hundreds of interesting bottles, the smell of fresh espresso and brioche (that’s how the Italians call their croissants) and a smile ...

What always strikes your eye is the diversity of the crowd. Side by side you find refined old ladies reading newspapers or meeting up with their friends and students discussing the latest news. What I am always amazed by ist the style of people in Italy. Contarena is the place to just sit and watch people, have some nice tramezzini, latte macchiato and on a sunny day maybe aperol with white wine or prosecco (recommendation!).
